We're here to help

Our Services

At the Grief Centre we have a variety of services available to assist those who are grieving. These include:

Counselling Services

Individuals

If you are dealing with the loss of a loved one and feel that despite their best efforts friends and family do not understand, we have counsellors who can help. They are trained to listen, support you and help you to find ways to deal with your loss. It does not matter how long ago you had your bereavement. Sometimes grief revisits when we least expect it.

Family/Whanau

Sometime families struggle after a death of a family member. Communication can be a challenge between family members as each responds to loss in different ways. Families often tip toe around afraid of upsetting each other. Sometimes outside help is needed to assist families to express their concerns, anxiety and sadness in a safe setting. This often helps families to express their loss with each other in a meaningful way.

See our Fee Structure for information on charges relating to our counselling services

Bereavement support groups

People often say ‘how will it help hearing other’s stories of loss?’, or, ‘it will just increase my sadness.’ However, that is not how it works. People who have experienced a support group comment that they had not realised others were going through similar emotions.   They also appreciate getting to know others who really seem to understand what they are going through. The Grief Centre runs support groups depending on interest and need in the community. We can also give you information on groups that are already operating in the community.  If you would like more information, just contact the Grief Centre.

Bereaved Parents Support Group:  Starting Tuesday February 21st, 7-9 pm. at The Grief Centre, Birkenhead.  The group will run for eight weeks, and is for parents who have experienced the death of a child.  Please click here for more information.

General Bereavement Support Group:  Starting Wednesday March 21st, 7-9 pm at 220 Universal Drive, Henderson.  The group will run for eight weeks, and is for people who have experienced any form of bereavement in the last few years.  Please click here for more information.

Children and Young People Advice Support and Counselling

The Grief Centre is building resources to provide information, support, advice and counselling to children, young people and their families dealing with loss. At present our counsellors can assist you as a parent to discuss your children’s needs. Our counsellors are also happy to provide individual sessions for children and young people. In time we hope to provide support groups for different age groups.

A Resource Library

The Grief Centre is developing a library of books and pamphlets with information on loss and grief. We hold resources from the excellent selection produced by Skylight in Wellington, and other relevant publications that support those that are grieving. We have several of the Skylight publications for sale at a reasonable cost.  Just click on the link Books for Sale. You are also welcome to phone or visit the centre to see what is available.
